East versus West Wittering
Trip to the Cleveland Arms last night resulted in the formation of an ‘advisory board’ . This could be a great help even if it means having to go back there regularly given the disappointing lack of pointers with regard to beach camping in Sussex; other than being told in no uncertain terms to stay well clear of the Scotts Farm Camping Site in West Wittering – unless I didn’t mind being kept up all night by all the piss-ups going on in what sounds more like a POW camp. Not exactly, high praise, but the Blackberry Wood Campsite in Ditchling was highly recommended by several of our new advisors, as was the St Ives Farm site in the Ashdown Forest and the Feather Down Farms site in Hastings.
Blackberry Woods Campsite had also been recommended by others, so we had considered it despite its website being a little over the top given it only has 20 pitches in their “cosy little private woodland glades”. However, being only just the other side of the South Downs it’s a little too close to home, and thanks to the likes of Cool Camping they’re booked out for pretty much the whole of the summer anyway. St Ives Farm doesn’t really fit the beach camping bill, and Feather Down Farms sites provide the tents for you whereas we’re looking for another opportunity to try out our new 5 metre Ultimate Bell Tent. Funnily enough, Tiff of Hotel Bell Tent lives on the same street as us, which I found out when I first tried to hunt one down online and suddenly saw her Bell Tent Mobile parked across the road (see above). This lucky coincidence resulted in a 5% discount and very happy customer.
Anyway, after much searching I found Stubcroft Farm on the The Happy Campers site. This is much more up our alley even if it’s in East rather than West Wittering and about a mile from the beach. I think we’ll be able to manage even if it means taking the bikes, so the kids don’t end up demanding to be carried. They also allow log fires, and that’s a big plus although I need to work out where I’m going to find a suitable container to ensure that fire does “not damage or burn the grass” as per their site policy. So, hopefully, we’ll have now some happy beach camping stories to tell sometime in mid-July … phew!
