Beryl’s Secret Camping Haven
I found out about 2, possibly 3 (see here), secret campsites near Beesands Beach nr. Kingsbridge in Devon, having spoken to an owner of old camper van about whether it was possible to park up overnight by the beach. Turns out that it’s forbidden, but that wasn’t stopping this grandmother and her 2 grandchildren. She also told me a few of her local secrets including the tiny Sugar Park site in nearby Beeson that I mentioned in my last post and a site referred to simply as the one run by Beryl. I’m calling it Beryl’s Secret Camping Haven as I saw a notice at the site saying ‘welcome to our camping haven’. The sign also said it had 20 ‘cut pitches’, but that you could camp elsewhere as long as wasn’t near other tents as they like campers to have maximum space and privacy. They also claim to be an unconventional campsite and I would guess that’s true given how unpublicised and out of the way it is, but there certainly seems to be more space than 20 pitches as I saw a whole scout troop in one of the fields. They also seemed to have good facilities with recycling bins, fridges, toilets, showers (coin-operated), sinks for washing-up and electrical points for re-charging mobile phones, etc. The sign also mentioned electrical hook-ups and there were a couple of caravans there, but I wouldn’t let this put you off as I doubt they get many judging by road and path to the site. There was also a pond and in one of the fields and although I’m not sure if it’s officially designated for swimming people, I was told by some campers that they’d seen people swimming in it that day. Prices looked affordable and although more expensive that the Sugar Park site, they have a lot more facilities. Dogs are allowed and for free, and I saw nothing to suggest that you couldn’t have campfires. There was also a wooden cabin there, which was bigger than a pod pad and more like the kind of cabin you get at Featherdown Farms albeit without the canvas part. No idea how much that costs to rent, but you could call Beryl at the number below as there seemed to be plenty of space in a beautifully unspoilt part of the country that’s in walking distance of an award winning beach.

Hi, I have just been informed by a friend of my mums campsite mention on this web site. She does not have an official name or advertise as she only really has friends and friends of friends etc staying there. She has been running for nearly twenty years which is why through word of mouth many now know about her site, but I thought I would clarify a few details about the site anyhow.
Unfortunately no swimming is allowed in the pond, no camp fires are allowed on the site and the old railway wagon is not for rent. At the time of Justin’s visit she did have a large scout troup staying which is why there were a few people making rafts etc for the pond.
If you are a friend of a friend and wish to contact her, her number is actually 01548580527, she is usually pretty full as Justin correctly stated we dont have people camping right next to eachother.
